'A Day Out' by Marguerite Derricourt

Adelaide, SA

On 3 July 1999, Rundle Mall welcomed four new residents —Horatio, Oliver, Truffles and Augusta. Made completely from bronze, these life-sized pigs look to be having a great day out in Rundle Mall as they walk the Mall, dig through the bin for food scraps and greet passers-by. The art installation officially known as A Day Out was created by Marguerite Derricourt, the winner of a national sculpture competition instigated by the City of Adelaide in the final stages of the Rundle Mall upgrades in the late 1990s. The people of Adelaide loved the pigs so much, a competition was held to name them and you can find a plaque next to each pig stating its name and the name of the person who named them. Children and adults alike are often seen hugging, sitting on and posing for pictures with the popular pigs on their days out in Rundle Mall.

'Bedtime Story,' Queen Street Mural

Barraba, NSW

"Bedtime Story" created by Scott Nagy and Krimsone is Barraba Public Art's latest addition to the public art trail. This amazing mural is featured on the wall of the local library. The mural is a dreamy narrative around Barraba's wildlife. A child sits reading while their imagination spills into the room they are in. The mural brings colour into the courtyard area. Making it the perfect shady spot for you to sit and enjoy some of the fabulous food and drinks Barraba has to offer.

'Edith' the Clydesdale Sculpture and Jetty Truck

Edithburgh, SA

Standing at the end of Edith Street, Edithburgh's distinctive jetty was once the centre of a remarkably busy working port. By the early 1920s, Edithburgh had become South Australia's third-busiest outport, shipping vast quantities of grain, wool, lime, gypsum and salt harvested from Lake Fowler and the many salt lakes surrounding the town. The waterfront bustled with ships, workers, wagons and horses. During the busiest years of the salt trade, hundreds of horses could be working in and around Edithburgh in a single day. Clydesdale teams hauled heavily laden wagons from the lakes and pulled small jetty trucks along the rails to ships waiting offshore. Their strength helped transform this modest coastal town into one of South Australia's most important regional ports. To mark the jetty's 150th anniversary in 2023, the Edithburgh Progress Association commissioned a sculpture of "Edith" the Clydesdale and arranged for an original jetty truck to be faithfully restored. Edith was painstakingly created by Peter "Turtle" Crosby of Cleve, while the historic truck was restored by the Ardrossan Men's Shed. Together, they honour the thousands of horses whose largely forgotten labour kept Edithburgh's industries and its busy port moving. You will find Edith and the restored jetty truck in Edith Street, near the centre of town, on the approach to the jetty.

'Heaven' Clifftop Viewpoint

Loxton, SA

Referred to as 'Heaven' by locals, this clifftop viewpoint above Habel's Bend provides a vantage point to look out along the Murray River. Directly across the river is Katarapko Island, part of the Murray River National Park, and to the right is the Loxton Riverfront Holiday Park. Habel's Landing, a popular houseboat mooring spot, is visible to the left. The viewpoint area is spacious and features shade structures, seating and lighting. A 'Peace Pole' marker, part of the international movement to spread the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" is planted at the site. It is one of more than 500 across Australia and 250,000-plus worldwide. The staircase access from Habel's Bend below, via the Big 4 Caravan Park, is reasonably steep with moderate fitness levels required to complete the track. Access is also available by car from the Kingston Road via a dirt track.

'Pigeon' Sculpture

Adelaide, SA

The humble pigeon has been elevated to new heights with the installation in Gawler Place of 'Pigeon', a homage to those feathery urban dwellers that inhabit many city centres, including our own Rundle Mall. Nationally and internationally recognised South Australian artist Paul Sloan is the creator of Pigeon, which will stand over two metres tall and is crafted out of mirrored stainless steel. Paul’s vision was to raise the status of the humble pigeon from an overlooked, ubiquitous creature to the realm of awe and wonder. “I see pigeons as proud flaneurs, promenading through our leisure and retail precincts. They are the quiet witnesses of our day-to-day activities in the city, our observers from day through to night,” Paul says. Find 'Pigeon' in Gawler Place, outside Nespresso.

'Rugs' Mural in Morpeth

Morpeth, NSW

Hand painted by local artist Patricia Van Lubeck, 'Rugs' is an artwork that covered up to about 200 square metres. See all four remaining rugs painted on Berkley Street in the historic township of Morpeth. 'Rugs' was commissioned by Maitland City Council as part of 'Morph It', funded by the NSW Government.

'Wish You Were Here' Mural

Maitland, NSW

Located on the side of Hunter Studios at Elgin Street, this mural depicts the relationship between Maitland's natural environment and steam trains. Curated by local artist, Mitch Revs, this mural was inspired by the local scenery in Maitland and features a South Maitland Railway 10 Class Steam Engine hauling coal - Engine No 10. This train remained in operation at Hexham until the Stockrington Colliery line was closed in 1987. The SMR 10 was featured occasionally at the Hunter Valley Steamfest.

‘Flow' Mural at Lee Street

Maitland, NSW

Commissioned by Maitland City Council as part of the Your High Street initiative, this mural was painted by local artist Patricia Van Lubeck. Patricia was inspired by the Maitland gasworks that were located at the current location of the cinema, which borders Lee Street. The artwork known as 'Flow' references the gasworks through abstract pipes and machinery with a slight art deco dressing that can also be interpreted as a circuit board.

"The Australian Farmer" Granite Sculpture

Wudinna, SA

In 1992 the Wudinna & District community decided it was time to recognise their history, community spirit and belief in rural Australia through a work of art. In the following 17 years the project was driven by the Wudinna & Districts Directions Group and was supported by many volunteers who willingly gave their time and talents. Amazing contributions were made by the Croatian Community Australia wide and Corporate Companies who without natural links to the community, believed in the "Australian Farmer". Artist Marijan Bekic spent time gaining a feel for the region and the local people and produced the concept which he titled "Australian Farmer". Many years passed until the committee made a pivotal decision to proceed in 2007. With only 30% of the project funds in hand, a belief in Marijan's commitment and faith in the community, the Wudinna township are now the custodians of this masterpiece. The "Australian Farmer" celebrates the spirit of Australian farming communities from pioneering days to the challenges of rural living today. It is a reflection of life, spirit and soul of the farming community.

100 Years of Rotary

In 2022, the artist, Will Maguire, was commissioned by the Rotary Club of Singleton on Hunter to create a sculpture commemorating a century of Rotary in Australia. Will Maguire crafts his artwork from a blacksmithing design studio located in the Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia. His journey began with training in industrial blacksmithing and boilermaking in Australia, followed by extensive international experience collaborating with celebrated blacksmiths. His sculpture, 100 Years of Rotary, located in parkland surrounding the Singleton Arts + Cultural Centre, draws on traditional blacksmithing materials and techniques as a tribute to the region's mining history and its people.

If you’re looking for a spot to surf the turquoise waters of the far south coast, head to 1080 Beach near Mystery Bay. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and a popular among locals for surfing, swimming and fishing. If it’s too cold for a dip or you’d like to keep your toes dry, take a walk along the sandy beach. When you’re finished being active, set up a picnic at one of the tables on the headland above the beach to enjoy a picnic with a view. From this point, you’ll be able to see the stretch of beach and inland to the mountains. Be sure to keep your eyes out as you’re travelling through the forest on your way to or from the 1080 Beach – you may see wallabies and kangaroos and it’s a good spot for some birdwatching if you have time.

10B Cycling Trail

Appin, NSW

If you’re looking to take your mountain bike out for a long ride, 10B cycling trail offers the perfect day out. At 15 kilometres long, it starts near the Appin Road entrance of Dharawal National Park and follows an unsealed road through open forest and woodlands along a sandstone ridge. This is a great bike ride for small groups and families with older children. The last three kilometres present more of a challenge, when the trail descends into Stokes Creek Gorge, leading to a good slog back up to the park’s northern entrance at Wedderburn. Pack a picnic and your binoculars because at the creek crossing, there’s a broad rock platform where you can stop for a break. Birds, including the raucous yellow-tailed black cockatoo, inhabit the area.

11 kilometre walking track is near Wisemans Ferry and follows a steep mountain ridge through lush gullies, past clear running creeks in Dharug National Park. This rough track will really get your heart racing with several steep climbs along the way. 11 kilometre walking track is an exhilarating challenge for adventure seekers. Experienced and fit bushwalkers might be able to finish the track in four hours but if you prefer to drop the pace then it’s a good idea to start 11 kilometre walking track early in the day to enjoy the scenic views and surrounding bushland. Catch your breath on a creek bank and take advantage of birdwatching along the way as lewins honeyeaters are bound to be seen in the trees, along with gang gang cockatoos. You might also spot goannas on the track and wildflowers like waratahs, red Gymea lilies and flowering heath – are abundant in spring.

17 Mile Falls

Nitmiluk, NT

17 Mile Falls amaze all who are lucky enough to see them. A hidden gem, the waterfalls can only be accessed by walkers on the Jatbula Trail. The trail is located in Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) and is a one-way 62 kilometre walk from Nitmiluk Gorge to Leliyn / Edith Falls that takes between 4 to 5 days to complete. 17 Mile Falls campground is the third campground along the trail, popular with walkers for its serene and striking scenery. The falls run throughout the year, fed by a permanent water source with the sandstone plateau acting as a huge sponge that slowly releases water into rivers and creeks. Toilets and an Emergency Call Device (ECD) are located close to campsites. This highly popular walk needs to be booked in Feburary and bookings are limited. Walking and camping fees apply.

The center piece is a 12m long "Welcome to the Barossa" sculpture which is a new landmark photo-point for all Barossa visitors. The pinnacle of the 1837 Barossa art trail is the sculpture "Wings of Barossa"; A a monumental sculpture with 2 angels wings. The sculpture is only complete when a person takes the 3 steps and poses between the wings as an angel.
