Plein Air Strathalbyn

Strathalbyn Soldiers' Memorial Gardens, Strathalbyn, South AustraliaSun, 11 Oct 2026, 10:30 am – 4:00 pm

About this event

Plein air, a French term meaning "out of doors", refers to the artistic practice of creating finished works in the open air, directly observing the landscape and capturing its atmosphere in real time. Strathalbyn, long celebrated for its picturesque scenery and heritage charm, provides an ideal setting for this tradition. Its riverside parks, historic streetscapes, and elegant gardens have inspired generations of photographers and artists, making it a natural home for a plein air festival.

Plein Air Strathalbyn will bring fifteen South Australian artists into the heart of the town. Throughout the day, they will be positioned in parks, under verandas, and on street corners, painting the scenery before them. Visitors will be able to observe the creative process as each artwork evolves.

An online judging form will allow visitors to vote for their favourite artwork, while three official judges will independently assess the pieces. At day's end, all artists will gather at the Strathalbyn Stationmaster's Art Gallery for a collective viewing of the completed works. Prizes will be awarded, and all artworks will be available for purchase, giving buyers the chance to take home a unique memento of Strathalbyn captured on the day it was created.

Spring in Strathalbyn is beautiful, creating an ideal backdrop for artists and visitors alike, reinforcing Strathalbyn's reputation as a distinctive and inspiring heritage tourism destination.
