From 7 August to 31 October, Carrick Hill presents Meet Me at Johnnies! Celebrating The Hayward Years at John Martin's, an exhibition celebrating the golden age of Adelaide retail.
For generations of South Australians, John Martin's was far more than a department store. It was a city landmark, a meeting place and a destination woven into the social fabric of Adelaide. This exhibition explores the store's remarkable legacy through the Hayward family's long association with the business, spanning four generations of leadership.
Step back to a time when shopping was an experience, city department stores were at the heart of community life and a trip to "Johnnies" was a cherished tradition. Meet Me at Johnnies! celebrates the people, innovation and ambition that helped make John Martin's one of South Australia's most iconic institutions.

This exhibition includes items generously loaned by SATC (Christmas Pageant), State Library of South Australia (with permission from David Jones Ltd) and private lenders.
