La Traviata entwined with Love, Jazz and Soul
About this event
Emotionworks Cut Opera presents Verdi's beloved La Traviata in a bold, fast-moving 90-minute cabaret-style production, fusing opera with jazz, blues, soul and timeless classics in a fresh and reimagined version with lots of new songs.
This much-loved opera classic is taken out of the traditional theatre and placed in a contemporary, intimate setting where the story can speak directly to its audience. La Traviata is the story of Violetta, the fallen one, a celebrated courtesan surviving in a harsh world. Living with a terminal illness, she discovers love for the first time with Alfredo and attempts to leave her past behind. But when Alfredo's father, Germont, demands that she sacrifice their relationship for the sake of family honour, Violetta is forced to make a devastating choice.
With Cut Opera's trademark wit, theatrical energy and a generous dose of humour, this production explores love, sacrifice, judgement and humanity, asking where true virtue is found. Verdi's unforgettable melodies are interwoven with great jazz, soul and blues standards, echoing the emotional heart of the story and offering a fresh perspective on a timeless work.
Award-winning director and creator Julie Edwardson leads a strong cast of opera and contemporary performers, starring soprano Katy Turbitt as Violetta, tenor Jason Wasley as Alfredo and David Skewes as Germont.
