This display extends 'The Long View', Daryl Austin's major exhibition at Adelaide Town Hall, continuing his 'Fictive Portraits' series of imagined portraits inspired by anonymous historical photographs.
Like the books that surround them, these paintings invite us to imagine stories. Removed from their original context, the anonymous figures become protagonists in narratives that remain unwritten. Austin offers only the slightest clues through titles such as Hawaii, 1964 and Sussex, 1942, encouraging viewers to speculate on the identity and history of each 'sitter' while blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction. At once familiar and uncanny, the portraits invite audiences to complete the story.
Daryl Austin is an inner-city Adelaide artist whose paintings explore the city's people, streets and evolving histories. A lecturer at Adelaide Central School of Art, he has sustained an artistic practice spanning four decades. His works are held in major public collections, including the Art Gallery of South Australia.
