La Mama Hope Punk Climate Festival - Dead Stock
About this event
A heretical solo performance confronting the troubling practices of the fashion industry.
A heretical solo performance by acclaimed fashion designer/contemporary artist Chelsea Hickman confronting her complicity in the troubling practices of the fashion industry.
Dead Stock is an anarchic ritual of punk song, video art, and runway performance from fashion designer/contemporary artist Chelsea Hickman that unites the transactional and often destructive reality of consumer fashion. It hallucinates a hellscape of literal tonnes of garment waste in which excess, commodity fetishism, and glamour are fuel for an apocalyptic fire.
The artist invites audiences to bring an item of clothing to sacrifice on the pyre.
Part of La Mama Hope Punk Climate Festival.
La Mama, Australia's most iconic intimate theatre, was founded in 1967 by Betty Burstall returning from the coffee-house theatre scene in New York City. Nowadays the coffee and biscuits are still free, you can still chat with the artists after the show, and the famous La Mama raffle still thrills.
You simply cannot leave Melbourne without having seen a show at its beloved La Mama Theatre.
