Bun dja, Exhibition by Aunty Julie Freeman and Markeeta Freeman

About this event

Bun dja means to remember in Dhurga and this exhibition invites audiences to remember and heal from the past. Shoalhaven Regional Gallery is proud to exhibit a re-installation of Forget me Not, a 1997 work by Aunty Julie Freeman, an installation that includes the former gates from the Bomaderry Aboriginal Children's Home, considered the birthplace of the Stolen Generations in NSW. This work is a highly significant early piece of Aboriginal political art, and this exhibition represents a special opportunity to return this important work to the South Coast and the community and location it came from.

Alongside this early work Aunty Julie Freeman has collaborated with her daughter Markeeta Freeman to create a new work of protective Mood-jin-gaals (spirits) who look out for children and community. The Mood-jin-gaals will be made from paintings, possums' skins, palm weavings and ink drawings and demonstrate the power of family, survival, connection, and culture.

Aunty Julie Freeman Aunty is a Gorawarl Jerrawongarla woman, and a traditional owner of South Sydney and the South Coast of New South Wales. She lives in Wreck Bay and comes from Sydney's local Aboriginal community of La Perouse and is a recognized artist, cultural leader and storyteller.
