Jake Yang's evolving installation, Fire Horse, features over 600 handmade ceramic tiles bearing the intricate impressions of decorative Chinese placemats.
The installation will grow and transform throughout the festival as children and young people take part in a series of artist-led workshops on Thursdays and Saturdays. Participants will paint their own bisque-fired ceramic tile, adding colour, character and personal expression to a collective artwork that develops one tile - and one story - at a time.
The work draws inspiration from the rare Year of the Fire Horse, a Chinese zodiac pairing associated with energy, boldness and independence. Reframing traditional decorative motifs through a contemporary lens, Yang reflects on his experience as a third-generation Chinese Australian and reconnects with a cultural identity he had once neglected.
