Fern's Alfresco brings you a slice of Italy in the heart of Melbourne this Summer. Green and white striped umbrellas shade the tables, with olive trees and festoon lights framing the garden and an Italo disco soundtrack setting the pace. Fresh basil sits on the tables, with terracotta and marble touches throughout.

Order a spritz and share cicchetti, then move on to chargrilled octopus, oysters, pizza, pasta and gelato. The star of the drinks list is L'Albero, Fern's cocktail tree, filled with four spritzes or four margaritas. Pizza is on every day, and every Thursday it moves from the kitchen to the garden, cooked live in front of diners. Handmade cheeses from That's Amore Cheese, the Thomastown cheesemaker, feature across the menu, from baby burrata to the mozzarella on every pizza.

At the heart of the garden is a wishing fountain. Order a drink and you'll receive a decorative gold coin to toss into the water for Il Desiderio, the wish.

Walk-ins are welcome, bookings encouraged.
