About this tour

Explore all four Lexington History Museums—including Buckman Tavern, Hancock-Clarke House, Munroe Tavern, and the Lexington Depot—for an experience no other tour can offer.

Step inside the actual buildings where history happened. Stand in the tavern where Lexington's militia gathered before the Battle of Lexington, visit the home where Patriot leaders John Hancock and Samuel Adams received Paul Revere's warning, and explore the tavern later occupied by British troops in the aftermath of the battle. With admission to all three historic houses included, you'll enjoy an immersive journey through the places where the American Revolution began.

  1. 1

Built in 1710, this central tavern in Lexington, MA served as a vital gathering place for locals and travelers alike, as well as an important site during the American Revolution. It was within these historic walls that Captain Parker and his militia waited in the early morning hours of April 19, 1775, for the arrival of British Redcoat troops. Today, Buckman Tavern connects visitors to the stories, people, and events that shaped the beginning of the Revolution and the town of Lexington. Explore the restored 18th-century taproom and rotating exhibits inside this National Historic Landmark. Buckman Tavern is also home to the museum shop, where visitors can browse history-inspired gifts, books, and souvenirs.(30 min)

  2. 2

Built in 1737, Hancock-Clarke House was the parsonage for the town of Lexington during the 18th century. Reverend Jonas Clarke was hosting patriot guests John Hancock and Samuel Adams when they were awakened by Paul Revere and his famous warning in the early hours of April 19, 1775. Thanks to generous grant funding, this site is also the location of new research and exhibitions related to the enslaved and indentured black populations of Lexington in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Visitors to Hancock-Clarke House take guided tours on the hour, lasting about an hour.(1 hr)

  3. 3

Built in 1735, Munroe Tavern was commandeered by the British Redcoat troops on their retreat back to Boston on the afternoon of April 19, 1775. Downstairs, the Tavern illustrates the British perspective of the day’s events. Upstairs, the story’s focus shifts to what it was like to have a family home taken over by enemy soldiers. The final highlight is the chance to see where President Washington’s dined when he visited the Tavern in 1789. Visitors to Munroe Tavern move through the museum at their own pace.(30 min)

  4. 4

Built in 1710, Buckman Tavern was a gathering place for both locals and travelers, and the site of many important town meetings. Captain Parker and his militia gathered in this tavern in the early morning hours of April 19, 1775 to await the oncoming British Redcoat troops. The upstairs of Buckman contains galleries for rotating, special temporary exhibitions. Visitors to Buckman Tavern move through the museum at their own pace. Audio tours are included with the price of admission.(1 hr)
